Old Meets New
I was browsing around on the web this morning and discovered that YouTube really does have it all. When I was growing up, I remember listening to one of my parents' LPs, An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer. It is fair to say that I was the only kid in my circle that knew all the words to The Vatican Rag, National Brotherhood Week, Send the Marines, New Math, and Who's Next.
Lehrer was a genius and something of a 60s cult figure. His simple tunes and witty lyrics remain a reflection of the times in which they were written. For those of you who have seen Mark Russell on PBS, Lehrer is the prototype. Russell is, by comparison, a cheap no-talent commercialized imitation.
Take a look at a couple of the videos below - classic Lehrer.
Send the Marines
So Long Mom (A song for World War III)
National Brotherhood Week
And with apologies in advance to my Catholic friends.
